Ageism is when older people are discriminated against based on harmful stereotypes. It’s the unspoken issue in the room that doesn’t get much attention.

Despite DEI departments addressing racism and gender bias, age bias is often neglected. Embracing an anti-aging lifestyle is a tool we all need to break free from aging stereotypes.

An anti-aging lifestyle not only keeps us younger and energetic but also fosters a positive, ageless environment at the workplace.

Understanding Ageism at the Workplace

Although 40 something doesn’t mean “old”, 69% of the workers first encounter age discrimination in their 40s.

One of the most common stereotypes is the assumption about less able to learn new skills, which echoes back to Mark Zuckerberg’s 2007 claim that young people are smarter.

Research also shows that women are 17% more likely to face age discrimination at work compared to men.

For individuals, ageism implies job denial, termination, or being deemed unsuitable for a promotion solely based on age

For companies, ageism means harder to hire and retain suitable talents in the workforce.

Taking the U.S. as an example, by 2030, one in four U.S. workers will be 55 or older.

Age discrimination discrimination can stunt productivity, hinder innovation, and create a less inclusive environment.

Ageism could also be subtle, manifesting through different behaviors and attitudes in the workplace.

For example, some opportunity goes to younger employees like training sessions or conferences.

There’s also the possibility of not being involved in some meetings or company activities, it is getting easier to happen while more people adopt a remote working style. 

In my experience, I joined the tech industry in my late 30s, a field notorious for age discrimination.

Initially, my age was unknown to most colleagues, except HR and my team lead.

As I got to know my colleagues better and they knew how old I was, seemingly harmless jokes about retirement plans created invisible pressure.

Consequently, I learned to avoid age-related conversations at work.

I didn’t face age discrimination in job opportunities; both tech companies in my 40s and ad agencies in my 20s showed equal interest in me as a candidate.

However, I must admit that the tech industry tends to embrace youth more than the advertising sector, which occasionally made me feel uncomfortable.

The Power of an Anti-Aging Lifestyle

Upon joining my first tech company, I embraced an anti-aging lifestyle to keep up with the demands of my career switch. 

Adopting an anti-aging lifestyle means embracing a comprehensive approach to overall well-being that seeks to slow the aging process and keep age-related decline in check.

This lifestyle doesn’t just focus on physical health, it also includes maintaining mental sharpness and emotional balance.

It all starts with nourishing our bodies with a balanced diet, rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can help ward off age-related diseases.

The company canteen provided a wide range of buffer choices at that time so I started to make wiser choices.

Thanks to the company gym that most tech company has, I maintained my regular exercise, mostly strength training, and some Zumba group classes at that time.

It helps maintain muscle mass, improves cardiovascular health, and cheers me up when I get too tense at work.

But that’s not all. An anti-aging lifestyle also means ensuring that we get enough sleep. 

Recognizing the importance of sleep, especially with early and late work hours in global marketing, I prioritized quality rest for work performance at the beginning and learned this is also beneficial for the anti-aging process. 

As you might already feel I sometimes work under stress, later I also started to learn stress management techniques like meditation, mindfulness, and deep breathing exercises.

These at the same time can also significantly contribute to emotional well-being and the reduction of stress-induced aging.

Finally, continuous learning is also part of an anti-aging lifestyle.

Staying mentally active and continually expanding our knowledge can help improve cognitive functioning and keep our minds sharp.

I went back to university to take a language course and restarted my salsa dance classes, both helped me a lot to maintain youth and young at heart.

An anti-aging lifestyle, from my perspective, offers a comprehensive way to improve our quality of life.

It aids in maintaining high energy levels, improving cognitive functioning, and enhancing overall well-being.

I find most of the tech companies’ facilities helped me to create the foundation of an anti-aging lifestyle, I am not talking about the stress part, but the company gym, canteen, health check, etc.

Looking back my anti-aging journey started about the same time when I first sensed ageism.

By adopting an anti-aging lifestyle, I better prepared myself to face challenges and intensive workload, and the challenge at work stimulates me further more to leverage data to measure my well-being.

This lifestyle, focusing on physical fitness, mental sharpness, and emotional stability, shatters the common stereotypes associated with aging. 

The vitality and agility that come with regular exercise, a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, and continuous learning assert that our abilities and potential are not dictated by our age.

With improved health, energy levels, and cognitive function, we’re more likely to feel motivated and determined to excel in our careers, regardless of our age.
