When it comes to Korean skincare for mature skin, the top-of-mind go-to is likely the more established and pricier brands such as Sulwhasoo or Missha Chogongjin.
However, I prefer to experiment with various combinations across different brands, without being limited by price range or brand reputation.
During my visit to Seoul in December 2023, I explored Olive Young several times, where I discovered a fantastic bargain that perfectly suited my needs.
The products I am happy with do not claim to be anti-aging or specifically for mature skin.
Yet, when it comes to skincare, I believe we know best what our skin needs.
Personally, I have streamlined my routine into three pillars over the years: cleansing, hydration, and sunblock.
I will introduce my favorite tried and tested products in the same order.
The K-Wave that Brought Korean Skincare to the Spotlight
As a self-professed skincare enthusiast, I’ve always been fascinated with the magical world of Korean skincare.
After all, when it comes to achieving that flawless, dewy complexion, no one does it quite like what we see in Korean popular culture like K-Pop and K-dramas.
However, this isn’t simply about emulating the crystal-clear skin of Korean celebrities, it’s much deeper than that.
It’s about embracing a skincare philosophy that is as intricate and layered as a K-Drama plot twist.
Koreans are famous not only with Samsung, LG, or BTS but also everyone works so hard to make these brands established and famous all over the world.
It’s a very competitive society from school to work, and beauty is also part of the competition. Whenever there’s demand, the supply will follow, with the culture of embracing beauty and hard work, new brands or new products are coming up with better formulas, lower prices, and higher effects almost every quarter.
As this wave of K-inspired beauty transcends borders, it carries with it the promise of results.
So, if you’ve been wondering how Korean skincare shot to international fame, well, much like a catchy K-Pop tune, it got stuck in our heads and hearts with its potent mix of cultural charm and skincare efficacy.
When I started with my Korean Skincare Journey?
A silver lining in the cloud that is the pandemic?
I relied heavily on online shopping so I got the chance to be experimental (as I wasn’t in a hurry to meet anyone in person) and took my time to explore more Korean skincare brands.
Browsing through various online platforms is almost like walking down the buzzing streets of Myeong-dong, minus the jet lag, of course. The variety is overwhelming, but that’s where the fun lies.
I did my research based on information from YouTube and reviews I could find online, that’s the time I found Numbuzin, I will introduce my favorite product in the following paragraph.
My experiments didn’t burn a hole in my pocket. Korean skincare to me, is not just about efficacy, but also about making beauty affordable.
I have been a long-term fan of La Mer and Estee Lauder, and I tried many other high-end brands in my life, so my praise for my newfound love with Korean brands isn’t apple to apple comparison with these brands.
What I am trying to say is they are good, and I did expect less with the lower price I was paying, but the result exceeded my expectations.
My Personal Favorite Korean Skincare Products for Mature Skin
Ah, the moment you’ve all been waiting for – the big reveal of my top Korean skincare picks for mature skin.
My skin type is combination and not sensitive. I don’t wear makeup frequently, usually just lipstick.
While the products treated me well, I strongly recommend being extra careful every time you try something new.
Cleanser:
Product: Beplain mung bean pH-balanced cleansing foam
What I look for in a cleanser:
Previously, I used CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser, which I was also very happy with.
I always prioritize gentleness; a face wash should help me rid my skin of dirt and oil while preserving its natural protection and moisture.
Review:
First of all, I don’t know why the one I bought from Olive Young in Seoul looks different from their website.
This cleansing foam cleanses my face well, meeting my need for gentleness without leaving a stripping, dry feeling afterward.
However, I must add one remark: I don’t expect much from any cleanser; I can be happy with more than 50% of the products I’ve tried.
Hydration:
Product: Mediheal Madecassoside cotton facial pad
What I look for Pad:
I am completely new to blemish pads; I didn’t know what to expect, but I’ve heard good things about them since 2023.
I was expecting it to work a bit like a toner.
Review:
I am in love with it; it’s more than just a toner!
I use it day and night as its instructions suggest.
I might use it about five days a week, but I didn’t plan it; sometimes I forget.
Nonetheless, they still work like magic for me.
My skin feels cleaner and noticeably brighter afterward.
I believe swiping with the cotton pad helps to gently remove some dead skin, resulting in a brighter complexion.
After about 30 days of using it, I’ve heard many people complimenting my glow, and it’s become my secret weapon.
Product: Numbuzin Toner No. 3
What I look for in toner/serum:
Previously, I used Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum, and I remain a loyal fan of this product.
As I believe less is more, I don’t have a habit of using toner.
So, what I look for is something nutrient-rich that can be absorbed quickly by my skin, like quenching its thirst. I seek a product that is not oily, yet potent and moisturizing.
Review:
I have finished three large bottles of Numbuzin Toner No. 3.
It’s even more lightweight than the Advanced Night Repair Serum.
Both products keep my face hydrated and plump; the Advanced Night Repair Serum works a little bit better but is much more expensive.
I kept using Numbuzin Toner No. 3 until I discovered the Mediheal Madecassoside cotton facial pad, I skipped the toner step, so I don’t have a bottle right now.
In the future, I will buy both Numbuzin and Estee Lauder again if my skin feels dry.
Product: Torriden Dive In Mask
What I look for in a mask:
Previously, I was using many different paper mask brands, from Numbuzin and Neutrogena to 111Skin.
I expect hydration only from a mask and am not very keen on brightening or other effects.
I prefer masks with simple ingredients to lower the chance of upsetting my skin.
Usually, I apply a moisture mask 1-3 times a week depending on how dry I feel.
Review:
The mask delivers hydration. Super good with it!
They include a lot of essences with the mask, so even after 20 minutes, the mask is still quite moist.
My skin feels more supple and nourished after using it.
Once again, it offers very good value in terms of price and efficacy.
Sunblock
Product: Numbuzin No. 3 Porcelain Base-skip Tone Up Beige SPG50+ PA++++
What I look for in tone-up sunblock:
Previously, I was using La Roche-Posay tone-up light cream 50+ PA++++.
I also have non-tone-up/non-color sunblocks that I wear more frequently, like Biore.
I always go for the highest protection in sunblocks because it’s very likely I won’t re-apply unless I am going for a hike.
Fuller protection makes me feel more comfortable.
Having said that, I know it won’t be very lightweight, but I am hoping it’s not too heavy.
For tone-up ones, I am not looking for foundation-level coverage, but maybe just to brighten a bit.
Review:
This is my 2nd tube of Numbuzin tone-up, and it works very close to a foundation for me.
The coverage is good, the protection is good, and the price is good.
The only thing I don’t like so much is its texture feels sticky, and I will need makeup remover before cleaning it.
